A fresh coat of paint is one of the easiest ways to completely transform how a space looks and feels. But having the right tools makes all the difference.
Painting doesn’t have to be a dreaded task, and it certainly doesn’t always have to be something you hire out. With the right tools, a little preparation, and a few tricks I’ve learned along the way, it can be one of the most rewarding and affordable updates you can make to your home.
These are my go-to painting essentials and are the products I like to keep on hand to make prep, painting, and cleanup go a little more smoothly.
Step Ladder
A 4-foot step ladder is one of those things that’s always good to have around. It’s the perfect height for reaching the tops of walls, cutting in near the ceiling, and getting to those harder-to-reach areas without dragging out a full-size ladder.
Drop Cloths
An absolute must for protecting your floors and furniture from drips and splatters. I especially love reusable drop cloths because you can keep them on hand and pull them out for every paint project.
Painter’s Tape
Painter’s tape is great for protecting trim, baseboards, and other areas you don’t want painted. Taking a little extra time during prep can make a big difference in getting those clean, crisp edges.
Paint Brush
A good-quality paint brush is worth the investment. I especially like a fine, angled brush for cutting in around ceilings, trim, and baseboards. It gives you more control and helps create a cleaner, more professional-looking finish.
Roller Covers
Don’t skimp on quality here. The right nap will depend on the surface you’re painting, but a good roller cover holds paint well and gives you smoother, more even coverage with less frustration.
Paint Roller Frame
Your roller frame is what holds the roller cover, so you want something sturdy and comfortable to hold. A good frame makes a surprisingly big difference, especially when you’re painting an entire room.
Paint Trays
A simple painting essential, but definitely a necessary one when you’re working with a roller. I like having a few trays on hand so I’m always ready for the next project.
Paint Tray Liners
Paint tray liners make cleanup so much easier. Once you’re finished, you can toss the liner and keep the actual tray clean and in good shape for future projects.
Stir Sticks
Simple but necessary! Always stir your paint before you start, even if it’s a brand-new can. I keep a handful of stir sticks around because I always seem to need one.
Paint Mixer For Drill
This is a game changer for thoroughly mixing larger cans of paint without doing it all by hand. Attach it to your drill and it quickly mixes everything together so your paint is consistent and ready to use.
Paint Brush Spinner
One of those little tools you don’t realize you need until you have one. Attach it to a drill to spin excess water and residue out of your brushes after cleaning, helping them dry faster and stay in better condition.
Putty Knife
A putty knife is useful for so many things during prep and cleanup. Use it to patch small holes and imperfections before painting, or scrape excess paint from a roller cover back into the can when you’re finished.
Spackling
Spackling is perfect for filling nail holes and small wall imperfections before you paint. Once it dries, give the area a quick sand so you’re starting with a smooth surface—the prep work really does make a difference in the finished result.
A Few Tips for a Better Paint Finish
Having the right tools is only half the equation. A little prep and patience can make just as much of a difference in the final result. Before you start, clean and prep your walls, fill any holes or imperfections, and protect your floors and furniture.
Always stir your paint thoroughly and work your way around the room in sections, cutting in around ceilings, trim, and baseboards before rolling the larger areas while those edges are still wet. And don’t rush cleanup! Taking care of your brushes, rollers, and leftover paint means they’ll be ready to go the next time inspiration strikes.

Not Sure Which White Paint Color to Choose?
Choosing a white paint color can be surprisingly tricky. Undertones, lighting, and the other finishes in your room can completely change how a white looks once it’s on the wall.
I’ve rounded up some of my tried-and-true favorites in my free Favorite White Paint Colors Guide to give you an easier starting point for your next paint project.

Painting may take a little time and effort, but few updates can change the feeling of a room quite as quickly or as affordably as a fresh coat of paint.
Start with good prep, invest in a few quality tools you’ll be able to use again and again, and don’t rush the process. The little things from properly mixing your paint to taking care of your brushes afterward really do add up to a smoother, more professional-looking finish.
Whether you’re refreshing one wall or giving your entire home a new look, I hope these painting essentials make your next project feel a little easier and a lot less intimidating.
