I’m not sure what it is about throw pillow covers, but I LOVE them. They’re easily one of my favorite ways to play around with color, pattern, texture, and shape without making a huge change or commitment to your space, or breaking the bank.
They’re also one of the easiest ways to transition your home from season to season. Instead of completely redecorating, swapping out a few pillow covers can introduce warmer colors, cozy textures, and beautiful patterns that subtly change the entire feeling of a room.
I almost always recommend buying pillow covers rather than an entirely new pillow whenever you can. Look for covers with a zipper so they’re easy to take on and off. When you’re ready for a change, simply swap the cover, fold the old one up, and store it away, without ending up with an entire closet full of pillows!
With fall right around the corner, I went on the hunt for some beautiful pillow covers that feel warm, cozy, and perfect for the season. From rich, earthy tones and classic patterns to beautiful textures, these are some of my favorite fall throw pillow covers I found.
1. Dark Brown Linen Pillow Cover
I love having a solid pillow mixed in with patterns, and this rich brown is such a beautiful color for fall. It adds warmth and depth while giving your eye somewhere to rest when paired with a busier floral or plaid.
2. Neutral Floral Pillow Cover
This floral immediately caught my eye because of the soft, muted colors. It has that warm, earthy feeling I love for fall without feeling overly seasonal, which means you could easily keep this one out well beyond the fall months.
3. Dark Brown Plaid Pillow Cover
You can never go wrong with a classic plaid for fall. I love how subtle the pattern is on this one. The thin contrasting lines add just enough interest while still making it really easy to pair with florals, solids, and different textures.
4. Brown Botanical Pillow Cover
I love the simplicity of this botanical pattern. The warm brown against the lighter background feels cozy and organic, and it would be such an easy way to bring pattern into a pillow combination without overwhelming the other pieces.
5. Neutral Floral Lumbar Pillow Cover
A lumbar pillow is one of my favorite ways to break up a grouping of square pillows, and the detail on this one is beautiful. The neutral floral pattern adds interest and a slightly vintage feel while still being easy to mix with other colors and patterns.
6. Moody Floral Pillow Cover
This might be one of my favorites of the entire roundup. I love a moody floral, and the deeper colors in this one are perfect for bringing some richness into your home for fall. It would look beautiful paired with simple solids and subtle patterns that let this one be the star.
7. Taupe Plaid Pillow Cover
If you want something a little softer than a dark fall plaid, I love this one. The warm taupe color and subtle grid pattern give it a cozy, relaxed look that could work beautifully throughout fall and well into the rest of the year.
8. Brown Floral Lumbar Pillow Cover
The tiny floral pattern on this lumbar is such a sweet detail. I love the warm brown background paired with the lighter floral because it brings in pattern without feeling too busy, and the lumbar shape makes it perfect for layering in front of larger pillows.
9. Textured Brown Pillow Cover
Texture can make such a difference in a pillow combination, especially when you’re working with a more neutral color palette. I love the chunky texture and deep brown color of this one for adding warmth, dimension, and that extra cozy feeling we all start craving in the fall.
How to Mix Fall Throw Pillows
1. Mix Color, Pattern, & Texture
The key to creating a collected pillow combination is making sure everything coordinates without perfectly matching. Start with a color palette, then mix solids, patterns, and textures within those colors. If one pillow has a larger or bolder pattern, balance it with something smaller and more subtle.
2. Vary Your Sizes & Shapes
Avoid using the same size pillow everywhere. Layering different sizes and shapes creates dimension and makes the arrangement feel more intentional. I love pairing larger square pillows with a slightly smaller square pillow and finishing with a lumbar for a different shape.
3. Think Beyond Traditional Fall Colors
Fall decor doesn’t have to mean covering your home in orange, red, and yellow. Look at the colors already in your home and choose deeper, warmer versions of them. Browns, creams, muted greens, warm neutrals, deep burgundies, and earthy tones can bring in that cozy fall feeling while still complementing your existing decor.
4. Don’t Forget About Texture
Texture is one of the easiest ways to make a home feel cozier for fall. Look for materials like velvet, boucle, woven fabrics, knits, or heavier linens. Even if you keep your color palette neutral, layering different textures can add so much warmth and visual interest.
The Designer Trick That Makes Throw Pillows Look Fuller
One thing that often gets overlooked when choosing throw pillows is the insert, and the insert matters just as much as the cover.
For that full, plush designer look, I typically recommend choosing an insert about 2 inches larger than your pillow cover. So, for example, if you have a 22″ × 22″ pillow cover, try a 24″ × 24″ insert.
Sizing up helps fill out the corners and gives your pillow that fuller look rather than leaving it feeling flat or underfilled. Keep in mind that this is a general rule of thumb, and the ideal size can vary depending on the size and shape of your pillow, the fabric of the cover, and the type of insert you’re using.
My Favorite Pillow Inserts
Throw pillow covers may be a small detail, but they can completely change the feeling of a space. That’s one of the reasons I love them so much. They give you the freedom to play around with color, pattern, texture, and personality without completely redecorating your home.
And as the seasons begin to change, you don’t have to transform your home overnight. Swap a pillow cover. Bring in a cozier texture. Introduce a slightly warmer color. Let your home transition with you and embrace each season in a way that feels authentic to you.
Whether you’re ready to fully embrace fall or you’re slowly easing your way into it, I hope these fall throw pillow covers inspire you to have a little fun with your home this season.
Not Sure How to Style Them?
