This post is all about tips for resetting home after holidays.

The holidays are over, and now you might be wondering, “What’s next?”

The chaos and busyness of the season is gone, and now we are left reflecting, setting new year intentions, and waiting for life to settle back into rhythm.

After weeks of hosting, traveling, and bouncing from place to place, it’s normal for your home to feel cluttered, overwhelming, and behind on everyday routines. This is where a thoughtful reset comes in.

Today, I am going to give you designer-inspired tips for resetting your home after the holidays. These simple, intentional steps will help make your space feel calm, functional, and like home again.

Observe Before You Organize

Before going all in and completely starting over, take a moment to simply observe each space of your home. Embrace the idea of slow living and notice how your home is currently making you feel.

Take mental notes of what works and what doesn’t, and then make a game plan from there. I think when we catch ourselves in situations or spaces that make us feel overwhelmed, we slip into panic mode and don’t think through things clearly.

Taking a pause helps you move forward with intention and creates a better plan, which will make organizing your home so much easier and less stressful. Having a plan will help you decide what to keep, how to store it, and what storage systems actually make sense for your home.

A Designer’s Reset Order

From a designer’s standpoint, this is the exact approach I take to get my house back in order after the holidays.

1. Clear Your Space

Start by taking down all of your Christmas decor. I personally like to start with the tree because that feels like the biggest task to me, since there are so many elements that go with it.

I remove all the ornaments first and put them back in the boxes they came in. If you don’t have the original boxes, you can use ornament organizers to safely pack each one away. Then I move on to the tree picks, ribbon, tree topper, and any remaining decor.

Once the tree is back to its bare self, I take it apart and store it back in the box. Then I move on to the rest of the Christmas decor around the house, like garland, stockings, wreaths, and other holiday decor pieces.

I like to get everything down and into storage bins first so everything is out of the way and I have a clean slate to work with. It makes the reset feel so much more manageable.

2. Do a quick cleaning

Once each space is clear, there’s usually glitter, faux pine needles, and flocked snow pieces all over the floor and other surfaces.

So, I like to do a quick vacuum, Swiffer dust my floors, and wipe down surfaces where I had decor.

Having a clean space instantly clears the mental clutter and helps you see your home more clearly.

I also recommend moving furniture back to its original placement. Doing this creates a sense of familiarity and helps you visualize your space better to see where you might want to make future improvements. Starting from the beginning is always helpful in my opinion.

3. Edit Before buying

Before purchasing anything new, edit your current inventory and use what you already have.

Analyze your space and sit with it. Are there items you no longer love? If so, set it aside to either sell or donate. If you still like something but it feels off, try moving it to a different room or rearranging furniture. You’d be surprised by how much furniture placement makes a difference.

It’s easy to think you need to go out and replace everything once the holiday decor comes down because it’s so empty-looking. But the solution is usually very simple, which is editing and rearranging. Thoughtful placement makes a bigger impact than rushing to buy new pieces.

4. Reset Unexpected Places

The post-holiday reset is the perfect time to reorganize your storage areas since everything is already being moved around.

This includes spaces like storage rooms, closets, built-ins, drawers, and even your refrigerator. After weeks of leftovers and hosting, it’s a good idea to clean out the fridge by throwing out expired items and wiping down shelves.

Because Christmas brings gifts and often new items into our homes, we need space and storage for them. So, taking the time to create intentional storage solutions for those pieces helps prevent clutter from building up. Taking the time to organize these spaces now makes everyday life feel easier as you move forward with the new year.

A Reset That Sets Up the Year

Resetting your home after the holidays isn’t about doing everything at once. It’s about creating a foundation.

This process helps you plan future projects, set realistic budgets, and make intentional upgrades throughout the year. Give yourself permission to move slowly, curate thoughtfully, and create a home that feels like you. Not one that feels rushed or trendy.
