This post is all about why every beautiful home starts with a vision.
Do you ever wonder how the most beautiful homes you see came to life? Well, they all started with a vision.
Vision is a powerful word with so many meanings. When you first hear the word vision, you might think of aesthetics. But what if I told you that vision goes far beyond appearances?
Vision is also about how a space makes you feel. Have you ever stepped into a room and instantly felt your mood shift? That is vision at work. You are experiencing the space and moving through it, which in turn makes you feel something.
The most beautiful part about vision is its versatility and how each of us interprets it through our own lens. We all see beauty in different ways, which is exactly what makes interior design so powerful.
After all, beauty truly is in the eye of the beholder.
Before the details, there is always a vision
1. what does vision really mean?
Vision is the ability to imagine the future with intention and creativity. It’s the picture we carry in our minds and even in our hearts of how we want a space to look, feel, and function.
When it comes to our homes, vision is more than a collection of pretty finishes or well-placed furniture. It’s a long-term, inspiring picture of how you want to live and feel within your space. Vision shapes the experiences you hope to create, whether that’s a cozy corner for morning coffee, a welcoming living room for gatherings, or a serene bedroom that feels like a retreat.
Think of it as your design compass. Vision gives every choice you make a sense of purpose and direction, keeping you focused on the bigger picture: creating a home that feels intentional, cohesive, and deeply personal.
At its core, vision isn’t just about the walls around you; it’s about the life you want to live inside them.
2. why vision matters
Vision matters because it sets the tone for our homes. We spend roughly two-thirds of our lives indoors. That’s a lot of time! And nowadays, with so many people working from home, we’re spending even more hours inside. That can make it difficult to maintain a balance between work and life. I know firsthand how challenging this can be.
Because we spend so much time at home, it’s essential that we love our spaces and how they make us feel. Our environment directly impacts our mood throughout the day. If your home is misaligned with who you are and what you value, you’ll notice it quickly.
Pay attention to the subtle cues when you’re at home. Ask yourself: How do I feel in this space? Do I feel inspired, calm, anxious, or restless? Listen to your body and your intuition. They will tell you everything you need to know.
Your vision tells the story. Life is short, and our homes should be sanctuaries. Places where we come to unwind, relax, and restore. When you start paying attention, you’ll notice things begin to shift and unfold.
Vision also keeps you focused and helps prevent impulse buys or scattered decisions. There are countless small details in interior design, and having a plan will keep you on track. It gives you a foundation to return to anytime you feel yourself drifting off course. Vision creates flow, cohesion, and a sense of ease.
It can also save you money. Just like vision guides your design choices, it can guide your finances too, showing you where to splurge and where to save.
And finally, vision brings meaning and value to your home. Your home should be a reflection of who you are. When you create a vision that is unique to your values and your story, you’ll build a space filled with purpose, importance, and gratitude.
3. how to start creating your vision
To begin creating your vision, it’s important to start at the very heart of the process: reflecting.
1. Grab A Journal:
Give yourself space and time to start writing. Take your journal and simply start writing. Record your impressions of your home and what you’re envisioning. Close your eyes, take a deep breath, and let each room speak to you. Write down anything that comes to mind, from how you want your spaces to feel to practical details like lighting, textures, and colors. Journaling helps bring clarity, and collecting your reflections over time will allow your vision to take shape naturally.
To really set the tone and get you into creative focus before you begin writing, do something that calms your nervous system like lighting a candle, making a cup of coffee or tea, sitting down, and curling up with a blanket. Make it feel like an inspirational ritual.
2. Start Reflecting:
Begin by asking yourself simple but powerful questions. Whether it’s in the morning light or during a quiet evening, take time to answer honestly:
- What energizes me?
- What calms me?
- Where am I most inspired?
- What feelings do I want each space to bring?
- How am I currently using this space?
- Is my current home aligned with my values and lifestyle? If not, what feels out of sync?
- What routines or rituals are most important to me at home?
- What design elements catch my eye over and over?
- What spaces have I seen in person, online, or in magazines that made me feel something?
Write freely, and don’t overthink. By answering these questions, you should have a very solid understanding of your dream vision after this moment of reflection.
3. Look For Synchronicities:
Now that you have reflected, read through your notes and look for synchronicities. You should notice the themes that repeat in your reflection, like certain colors, textures, or moods. These are gentle cues pointing you toward what feels authentic. Take what resonates and leave what doesn’t.
4. Use Imagery:
Next, you should start creating your vision with imagery. Since we just went over an exercise on how the room makes us feel, now it is time to visualize the aesthetics of it. Start with a mood board. This can be digital or physical, and collect images that resonate with your reflections.
Here are some great ways to create your vision boards:
- Pinterest Boards: Pinterest is full of inspiration. You can type in any keyword, and thousands of pins will pop up. Save what inspires you to a digital board and give the board a name.
- Pin Boards: Cut out magazine clippings, newspaper articles, or print out images from your computer and glue them onto a poster board or pin them up on a pinboard. This is a fun approach for someone who is very hands-on and likes to see things in person. This is a great method to use because you can hang it up and look at it every day in your office or bedroom as a daily reminder of your dream home.
Images often capture feelings that words cannot, and they help translate your vision into something visual and tangible.
5. Gather Inspiration From Other Homes:
If you’ve toured beautiful houses or admired spaces in person, take note of the details that linger in your mind. Was it the natural light? The mix of textures? The layout? These observations provide clues to what draws you in.
6. Go Beyond Home For Inspiration:
Inspiration doesn’t have to stop at interiors. Think about the colors of nature, the mood of a favorite restaurant, the travel destination, or the textures of your favorite outfit. All of these can spark ideas for how you want your home to look and feel. When you pay attention to what consistently inspires you, even outside of home design, you create a vision that’s uniquely yours.
Use all of these techniques or use some. It is your choice! These are all great ways to begin creating your vision.
4. start small
Designing your home can feel overwhelming, so start with just one space at a time and don’t rush the process. Give yourself the time and space you need so you can approach it with clarity.
Make a list of each room in your home and move through them one by one. Remember, your home is an investment, and your choices should be intentional.
Even small moments of clarity make the next decision easier. As you continue, you’ll notice patterns, and the process will feel more natural over time.
Take a quiet moment this week to pause, reflect, and write. Your dream home begins on paper long before it comes to life. At the end of the day, vision is a blend of reflection and inspiration. By slowing down, writing your thoughts, and collecting imagery, you’re giving your dream home a place to begin long before it comes to life.
