Coffee table books are one of my favorite styling elements because they do so much more than fill an empty surface. They add warmth, personality, and a lived-in feel to a home while giving guests a glimpse into the things you love.
The only downside? They can get expensive.
Thankfully, there’s an easy (and inexpensive) way to build a beautiful collection without spending hundreds of dollars. It’s a trick I’ve used for years in both my own home and throughout my design projects, and it’s one of my favorite ways to find books that feel unique and personal.
Why I Love Thrifted Coffee Table Books
- They’re inexpensive.
- They’re one-of-a-kind.
- They often have beautiful linen covers hiding beneath the dust jacket.
- They create a collected, layered look instead of feeling like they were all purchased at once.
- They allow you to choose books that actually reflect your interests.
If you love the look of styled coffee table books but want to stay on budget, here’s exactly what I do:
Head To Your Local Thrift Store
One of my favorite places to hunt for coffee table books is my local Goodwill. I always make a beeline for the hardcover book section because that’s where I’ve found some of my best treasures over the years.
The best part? Most of the hardcover books at my local Goodwill are only around $2 each. For the price of one new coffee table book, you can often leave with an entire stack.
Don’t feel limited to Goodwill, though. Any thrift store, antique shop, used bookstore, or library book sale can be a great place to discover beautiful books at a fraction of the cost.
Choose Books That Fit Your Style
Before you start filling your cart, take a moment to think about where you’ll be displaying your coffee table books. The space you’re styling can help guide the size, color palette, and overall look of the books you choose.
Maybe you’re drawn to soft neutrals, rich earth tones, or something more colorful. You might prefer books that are all the same size for a clean, tailored look, or you may love the character that comes from stacking books of varying heights. There isn’t a right or wrong approach. Choose what feels most at home in your space.
One of the biggest mistakes people make when thrift shopping for books is judging them by the dust jacket.
Some of my favorite coffee table books looked outdated at first glance, but underneath was a beautiful linen or hardcover binding in a timeless neutral color. Before deciding whether a book is worth bringing home, always remove the dust jacket. You might be surprised by what you discover.
Finally, don’t forget to pay attention to the titles. While you want your books to look beautiful, they should also reflect your interests. Whether it’s interior design, travel, architecture, gardening, or cooking, choosing books that genuinely inspire you will make your collection feel much more personal.
Yes, this process can take a little extra time, but that’s part of the fun. You’re carefully curating a collection that’s unique to your home instead of simply buying whatever happens to be on a store shelf.
Styling Your Coffee Table Books
Now for my favorite part: styling your thrifted coffee table books.
One of the things I love most about decorating with coffee table books is how versatile they are. Whether you style them on a coffee table, console table, nightstand, or open shelf, they instantly add height, texture, and personality to a space.
There isn’t one “right” way to style them. The ideas below are simply a few of my favorite ways to use coffee table books throughout the home.
Easy Ways to Style Coffee Table Books
- Stack two or three books of varying sizes.
- Top them with a candle, decorative chain, bead garland, or small sculpture.
- Use them to elevate a vase or bowl.
- Display them on open shelving.
- Layer them on console tables.
- Style them on nightstands.
One of my favorite things about decorating with thrifted coffee table books is that every stack tells a story.
Maybe it’s a book about architecture, gardening, travel, or interior design. Maybe it reminds you of a place you’ve visited, a hobby you love, or somewhere you dream of going someday.
Your home should feel like a reflection of you, and even something as simple as a stack of books can help tell that story.
Beautiful homes aren’t built all at once. They’re collected over time, one meaningful piece at a time.
