One of my favorite parts of traveling is noticing the homes and architecture that make a place feel special.
During our recent trip to Maine, I couldn’t stop admiring the historic homes, charming inns, and architectural details that seemed to tell a story. There was something about them that felt warm, inviting, and lived in.
But here’s the good news: your home doesn’t have to be 100 years old to have character.
In fact, literally any home has the ability to add charm and personality. Whether you live in a brand-new build, a builder-grade home, or a historic property, there are plenty of ways to create a home that feels layered, collected, and uniquely yours.
Homes shouldn’t feel stark and cold. They should be filled with warmth, character, and a bit of charm.
Here are a few of my favorite ways to add character to any home.
1. Add Architectural Details
This is one of my favorite ways to add character to a home.
Think crown molding, wainscoting, picture frame molding, detailed baseboards, or adding trim detail to interior doors. These architectural elements instantly create texture, depth, and visual interest.
Instead of looking at flat walls and basic trim, you’re adding dimension and creating features that make a home feel more custom and thoughtfully designed.
Even small additions can make a huge impact.
2. Choose Aged Brass and Metals That Patina
I love a metal finish that naturally ages over time.
That’s part of the beauty of it.
Materials like aged brass develop character through fingerprints, everyday use, and the natural patina that occurs over the years. Rather than looking worn out, they often become even more beautiful.
Unlike trendy finishes that come and go, aged metals feel timeless and help create a home that evolves naturally alongside the people living in it.
3. Incorporate Natural Materials
Natural materials instantly add warmth and authenticity to a home.
Think marble, granite, quartzite, natural wood, and stone.
One of the things I love most about these materials is that no two pieces are exactly alike. The veining, movement, texture, and imperfections are what make them so beautiful.
You can pair simple cabinetry with a stunning marble countertop and instantly create a focal point full of character.
These materials also tend to wear gracefully over time, adding even more charm as the years pass.
4. Go Thrifting and Antiquing
There is nothing quite like finding a one-of-a-kind piece.
Visit local antique stores, flea markets, estate sales, or thrift shops and keep your eyes open for unique treasures. Whether it’s an old wooden stool, a vintage mirror, antique artwork, or a beautiful piece of furniture, these items bring personality into a space.
Family heirlooms are another wonderful way to add character.
The best part? These pieces tell a story without saying a word.
5. Layer in Vintage Rugs and Furnishings
Vintage rugs and furnishings are one of the easiest ways to create a home that feels collected rather than decorated.
Etsy is one of my favorite places to find vintage rugs because many of them are truly one-of-a-kind.
Warm wood furniture, antique side tables, vintage dining tables, and unique accessories help create depth and personality that can’t always be achieved with mass-produced pieces.
The goal isn’t perfection. It’s creating a home that feels like it has been thoughtfully gathered over time.
6. Don’t Overlook the Small Details
Sometimes it’s the smallest details that make the biggest difference.
Think unique countertop edges, scalloped backsplashes, crystal door knobs, decorative hardware, or detailed light fixtures.
These little touches may seem insignificant on their own, but together they create a home that feels thoughtful and full of charm.
The details matter.
7. Let Your Home Be Lived In
Don’t be afraid to let your home live.
It’s okay if things get nicks, dents, scratches, and signs of wear. Those imperfections aren’t flaws. They’re evidence of a home that is being used, loved, and lived in.
Our homes should tell our stories through the pieces and materials we surround ourselves with.
Character isn’t something you can buy in a single shopping trip, and it certainly isn’t reserved for historic homes.
Whether your home is 100 years old or brand new, character is created through thoughtful details, collected pieces, natural materials, and the stories that unfold within its walls.
The beautiful thing is that you don’t have to do it all at once. In fact, I think the most charming homes are created slowly over time. Layer by layer. Piece by piece.
So don’t worry about creating a perfect home.
Instead, focus on creating a home that feels warm, welcoming, and uniquely yours.
Because at the end of the day, the homes with the most character aren’t always the oldest or the most expensive. They’re the homes that reflect the people who live there and tell a story that’s entirely their own.
