Bloom baskets have quickly become one of the cutest gift trends all over TikTok and social media, and honestly, I completely understand the hype.
They’re thoughtful, personalized, beautiful to look at, and surprisingly simple to make. Whether you’re putting one together for a birthday, baby shower, Mother’s Day, or just because, bloom baskets are such a creative way to make a gift feel extra special.
I recently made one for one of my best friends’ birthdays, and not only was it SO much fun to create, but it turned out even prettier than I imagined. The best part? It took less than an hour to put together and can easily be customized based on the person you’re gifting it to.
In this step-by-step guide, I’m sharing everything you need to make your own bloom basket, including the supplies I used, gift ideas, styling tips, and how to assemble it all together.
What You Need to Make a bloom basket
Before we dive into the process, let’s break down everything you’ll need to create a bloom basket of your very own.
A Basket
Any basket will work! You can do a wicker or woven basket like I did, or choose whatever style fits the look you’re going for.
Wet Floral Foam
Make sure you grab the wet floral foam, not the dry version. The dry version works best for faux florals, while the wet foam is what you’ll need for a real floral arrangement.
Plastic
This protects your basket from the moisture of the floral foam. You can use clear plastic liner, grocery bags like I did, or even a garbage bag cut to size.
Small Wooden Dowel Rods
These are used for attaching the small gifts inside the basket. You’ll tape the items onto the dowels so they can easily stick into the floral foam.
Clear Tape
You’ll use clear tape to attach the gifts to the wooden dowels.
Small Gifts or Basket Fillers
This is where you can really get creative and personalize the basket. I used around 10 smaller gifts, which filled the basket perfectly without overcrowding it.
Flowers
I used:
- 2 bouquets of roses
- 2 bouquets of baby’s breath
This ended up being the perfect amount for my basket size, although I honestly could’ve added one more bouquet of roses…but that’s just the perfectionist in me 😉
Small Tub or Container
You’ll need something large enough to soak the floral foam blocks in water.
Good Scissors
You’ll be trimming flower stems quite a bit, so a sturdy pair of scissors is important.
Flower Food
This helps keep the flowers fresh longer.
Pocket Knife
Helpful for trimming the floral foam to fit your basket size.
Vacuum
Trust me on this one…it gets messy 🙂
Shop Everything I Used For My Bloom Basket
I rounded up all of the exact supplies, flowers, gift fillers, and little details I used for this bloom basket right here.
Where I Bought Everything
One of my favorite things about this DIY is how accessible everything is. You can easily find these supplies at places like Walmart, Target, Michaels, Hobby Lobby, Dollar Tree, or even Dollar General.
Here’s where I personally bought everything for my bloom basket:
- Flowers, Starbucks gift card, wet foam, and wooden dowels: Walmart
- Basket, small gifts and basket fillers: Five Below
I originally considered grabbing the floral foam and dowels from Dollar Tree since they carry them too, but Walmart ended up being a convenient one-stop shop.
Also…don’t sleep on Walmart’s floral section. Their bouquets were surprisingly beautiful and affordable.
How Much I Spent
In total, I spent around $75 creating my bloom basket.
Here’s the full breakdown:
- Flowers: $23.48
- Wet floral foam: $6.47
- Starbucks gift card: $15
- Wooden dowel rods: $1.32
- Small gift items: $19.59
- Woven basket: $5.55
Total Including Tax: $75.36
Honestly, this can easily be customized to fit whatever budget you’re comfortable with. You can make a smaller version for under $40 or create a larger, more elaborate basket with even more gifts and florals.
How To Assemble A Bloom Basket
Step 1: Prep Your Workspace
Start by laying out all of your supplies on a flat surface. I used my kitchen island, which worked perfectly, but a dining table or countertop would work great too.
Step 2: Size and Soak the Floral Foam
Before soaking the foam, place the dry blocks inside your basket to make sure they fit properly.
One full block fit perfectly in my basket, but the second needed trimmed down slightly. Once everything fit, I filled a large plastic container with water and added one packet of flower food.
Then I placed both floral foam blocks into the water and allowed them to soak completely until they sank.
Step 3: Line the Basket
While the foam soaked, I lined my basket with plastic grocery bags to protect it from moisture. I used three bags to make sure everything stayed sealed and protected.
Step 4: Prep the Flowers and Gifts
Next, I unpackaged all of the flowers and removed the leaves and thorns.
Then I taped each small gift item onto wooden dowel rods. One of the items was a bit heavier, so I used two dowels for extra support.
Step 5: Add the Floral Foam
Once the foam was fully soaked, I placed it snugly inside the basket.
I also added extra plastic lining around the sides of the basket for additional protection from water.
Step 6: Arrange the Gifts
I started by placing the larger gift items toward the back and smaller items toward the front.
Try not to push the dowels all the way through the foam, since puncturing too many holes can make the arrangement less stable.
Step 7: Add the Flowers
Right before placing each flower into the foam, I cut the stems at an angle to help them absorb water better.
I started with the roses first since they were larger, then filled in the gaps with baby’s breath.
One helpful thing I learned while researching floral arranging is that once you place a flower into the foam, you shouldn’t reuse the same hole if you move it. Reusing holes can create air pockets and affect how the flowers absorb water.
As I arranged everything, I kept rotating the basket to make sure there weren’t any empty gaps.
Small Gift Ideas for Your Bloom Basket
One of my favorite parts about bloom baskets is how customizable they are. You can truly tailor them to the person you’re gifting it to.
Here are a few cute ideas:
- gift cards
- skincare products
- lip gloss or makeup
- candy or snacks
- candles
- mini books or journals
- coffee items
- hair accessories
- cozy socks
- self-care products
- jewelry
- drinkware
- tiny home decor items
The possibilities are honestly endless.
And there you have it… your very own bloom basket!
This has easily become one of my favorite DIY projects I’ve done so far, and I already want to make more. I love how versatile they are for literally any season or occasion.
You could absolutely recreate this using faux florals, but personally, I love using fresh flowers for something like this. They smell amazing, look beautiful displayed in a home, and make the entire gift feel even more special.
I also love that this gift is both beautiful and practical. The recipient gets flowers, personalized gifts, and a reusable basket all in one thoughtful arrangement.
If you make your own bloom basket, I’d love to see it!
