A clean, mess-free home, doesn’t have to be hard to maintain.
Cleaning can be one of the most dreaded tasks ever!
I used to despise it until I created daily and weekly habits to help me stay on top of my cleaning.
Creating small habits to keep your home tidy is an absolute game changer.
Instead of binge cleaning for an entire day, follow these 5 tips to help you stay on top of your cleaning throughout the week so you can go live your life to its fullest instead of wasting your days away cleaning a messy home!
This post is all about easy ways you can keep your home tidy.
1. Rank your cleaning tasks from highest to lowest priority
Everyone has a different definition of the word “clean.” For some people, it means that their house is spotless, picked up daily, and looks like no one lives there. For others, it might mean that some of their items are laid out around the house and there’s a little dust here and there. Either way is absolutely OKAY.
No one is to tell you how you should live and what your home should look like. There is no right or wrong way to how and what you should clean.
With that being said, rank your cleaning tasks from their highest to lowest priority. For example, maybe vacuuming everyday or every other day because you have a dog is a must for you because you want to stay on top of the dog hair. Or for others vacuuming once a week is just fine for them.
Think about all the things you typically clean and make a list of those tasks. Then go item by item and rank them in order to your liking.
This gives you a great visual overview of what you typically clean so you have a better idea of how you can prioritize your cleaning tasks.
2. Decide what can be broken down into daily, weekly, and monthly cleaning tasks
Once you have your list of all your cleaning tasks ranked from highest to lowest priority, I recommend breaking that list down into daily, weekly, and monthly cleaning tasks.
Take a look at your high-priority tasks. These items should be things that you try to do on a daily or every other day basis. For example, this could be dishes, laundry, wiping down counters, vacuuming, and Swiffer dusting your hard surface floors.
Some of these high priority tasks can also be turned into weekly things such as washing your bedding, cleaning your toilets, dusting, Swiffer mopping, wiping down appliances, etc.
For your low-priority cleaning tasks, these can be turned into monthly things you do.
Some examples of this would be mopping your floors with a real mop, cleaning your basement if you have one, and cleaning the inside and outside of your washer and dryer, microwave, refrigerator, dishwasher, etc.
These are things that need cleaning every once in a while but are not necessarily an everyday task. You can still keep your home tidy by doing just a little bit each day.
3. Make yourself some daily, weekly, and monthly check lists
I am a big to-do list girl! There’s something so satisfying about marking off whatever task you just accomplished.
I recommend making a check list for each category: daily, weekly, and monthly. This is a great visual so you can see what you are accomplishing.
I find this to be very motivating and it makes me feel fulfilled knowing I accomplished something with my day. Remember, even the smallest of tasks completed is a huge win!
4. Have fun with it and give yourself some grace
Cleaning isn’t always the most fun thing to do, but try to make it fun! Listen to your favorite podcast or music, call a friend or family member. This is the perfect opportunity for you to habit stack and get some other things done while you clean!
For some reason, doing those things above really motivates me and put me into a productive mindset. These things also make the time go by faster.
If you don’t get everything done that you wanted to, or life is simply lifeing, don’t sweat it. Take the time you need and get back into it when you can.
Try not to beat yourself up over not accomplishing everything in one sitting. We all have big goals, but sometimes it takes a little extra time to accomplish them and that is a-okay!
Sometimes we put too much on our plates and it is just not possible to get everything we want done in a single day, week, or month.
5. Set timers
Make cleaning into a fun game!
Limit yourself only a certain amount of time to get your cleaning tasks done so you aren’t spending too much time on it.
Depending on how much time you have, maybe set your timer to 10 minutes, 30 minutes, or an hour.
There are many days where I don’t feel like cleaning or doing a dang thing. But when I set a timer on my phone…it’s show time!
Something about it is very motivating and I do my best to knock out as much as I can in that amount of time.
Then, once the timer has run out and I have more time or feel like I could do more, I will set another timer and keep on keeping on!
