Choosing the right rug size can completely change how a room looks and feels. One of the most common design mistakes homeowners make is choosing a rug that is too small for their space. A properly sized rug helps anchor furniture, define seating areas, and create a room that feels balanced and intentional.

In this area rug size guide, I’m sharing the five rug measurements interior designers rely on when designing living rooms, dining rooms, and bedrooms.

If you want to go deeper into choosing the right rug beyond sizing, I also share the three designer decisions that matter most when selecting an area rug for your home.

1. Living Room Area Rug Size Guide

In a living room, you will want to ensure that the area rug is large enough so that all the front legs of the main furniture pieces are on the rug.

The main furniture pieces include any sofas, accent chairs, and end tables.

Ensuring that the main furniture pieces’ front legs are on the rug is very important because this makes your space feel grounded and larger.

If you do not have the main furniture pieces’ front legs on the rug, your furniture will appear to be floating and look disproportionate.

If you choose a rug that is too small, your furniture pieces are going to overpower your living room and it will make the room feel much smaller.

One thing to keep in mind when choosing an area rug for your living room, is to be sure to choose something with a low pile height.

You do not want your rug to be too thick where the furniture pieces’ front legs are unlevel with the back legs. This can lead to furniture tipping over.

Some typical area rug sizes for a living room are:

  • 8×10
  • 9×12

2. Dining Room Area Size Guide

More often times than not, many people choose an area rug for their dining room that is too small for their space.

When choosing a rug for your dining room, you want to ensure it is large enough so that all four legs of the chairs are still on the rug when pushed out from the dining table.

If you’re currently shopping for a rug, I also put together a curated list of timeless area rugs I come back to again and again that work beautifully in a variety of spaces.

A good rule of thumb is to leave about 18 to 24 inches of rug all the way around the perimeter of it. This allows enough space for someone to slide their chair in and out safely from under the table without it falling off the edge of the rug.

If it is possible, you can also consider leaving at least 12 inches of space between the area rug’s edges and the walls so your rug isn’t overpowering the space.

Some typical area rug sizes for a dining room are:

  • 8×10
  • 9×12

Designer Tip:

If you’re debating between two rug sizes, I almost always recommend sizing up. A rug that is slightly larger will help anchor your furniture and create a more cohesive layout. Rugs that are too small often make furniture feel disconnected and can make a room look unfinished.

3. Area Rug Size Under A King Bed

A bedroom with a king size bed allows for a larger sized area rug. In this case, you will to place the rug underneath the bed and ensure that there are at least 24″ or more of rug off of each side of the bed.

The whole point of having an rug underneath your bed is so your feet have a place to rest when you are getting in and out of bed.

Unlike in the living room scenario, you do not need the front legs of your furniture to sit on top of the area rug. Actually in this case, it is preferred that all the legs of the nightstand are off the rug.

Some typical area rug sizes for a bedroom with a king size bed:

  • 8×10
  • 9×12 (this is preferred)

4. Area Rug Size Under A Queen Bed

Bedrooms with a queen size bed follow the same rules as bedrooms with a king size bed, except that you are going to want to go just a tad smaller.

Again, ensure there are at least 24″ or more of area rug off of each side of the bed for your feet to rest on when getting in and out of bed.

And, do not put the front legs or any legs of your nightstand on top of the rug.

Some typical area rug sizes for a bedroom with a queen size bed:

  • 8×10 (this is preferred)
  • 6×9 (for a smaller room)

5. Area Rug Size Under Twin Beds

And last but not least, are bedrooms with a twin size bed.

Again, the same exact rules apply for twin size beds as they do with king and queen size beds, except that you are going to want to go even smaller so that the rug is proportionate with the bed.

Some typical area rug sizes for a bedroom with a twin size bed:

  • 6×9 (this is preferred)
  • 5×8

Area Rug Size FAQ

What size rug should go under a couch?

In most living rooms, the rug should be large enough for at least the front legs of the sofa and chairs to sit on the rug. This helps anchor the seating area and creates a more cohesive layout.

What size rug works under a dining table?

A good rule of thumb is to allow at least 18 to 24 inches of rug around the dining table. This ensures that chairs remain on the rug even when pulled out.

Is it better for a rug to be too big or too small?

Interior designers almost always recommend choosing a rug that is slightly larger rather than too small. A rug that is too small can make furniture look disconnected and out of proportion within the room.

Choosing the correct rug size is one of the simplest ways to make a room feel professionally designed. The right rug anchors furniture, defines the layout of a space, and helps create balance throughout the room. When in doubt, remember that rugs should connect furniture together rather than float in the center of a space.
